Älskade Ohope i Nya Zeeland!

Jippi , så var vi tillbaka  i Ohope och dessutom i samma  hus som vi bodde  i 8 månader under 2016-2017! Ja det är en speciell  känsla när vi kommer hit. Underbart och lite sorgligt  för visst saknar vi Ohope ibland när vi är hemma i Sverige.

Det är så underbart när vi kör genom Whakatane och ner för backen och ser havet och vågorna som rullar in. Ja, Ohope är en väldigt speciell plats för oss. Vi är så otroligt glada att vi från lilla Lomma ”råkade” hitta denna lilla pärla med super fina vågor, vacker natur, mysigt och framförallt boende på stranden för 6 år sedan! Så nervösa vi var när vi först kom hit och skulle bo här i 8 månader och så blev det så bra! Vi fick vänner för livet och nu är det tredje gången vi är tillbaka!!

Efter lunch på Moxi caféet med väldigt spännande rätter kom vi till West End som stranden framför huset  heter.  Nu var det helrenoverat av den nya ägaren Craig. Vilket lyft! Han har gjort det så fint. När vi bodde här sist var det verkligen inte så fint men nu wow!!

Vi träffade Troy med hela surfskolan och Hugo fick låna en bräda direkt. Så det var bara att ta på våtdräkterna och kasta sig ut. I Ohope brukar det vara fina nybörjarvågor men idag var det väldigt högt för att vara Ohope!! Tokiga surfare låg i vattnet där ute där de stora vågorna rullade in. Vi höll oss i det vita idag, inte riktigt bekväm med så mycket vatten över oss haha! 

Efter en härlig surf åkte hela familjen till New World, mataffären i Whakatane. Vi storhandlade för nu hade vi kök, kyl och frys. Hannes ville baka hallonpaj och grilla ville vi. Ja det blev bilen full med mat!

Jag och Jimmy ställde klockan tidigt första morgonen, innan solen gick upp. Vi jobbade lite och sen när första ljuset började komma blev det kaffe på fina bänken på stranden. Därefter  hoppade vi  i våtdräkt och sprang ut i havet! 

Wow, vi var många surfare ute redan innan klockan 7. Det är något speciellt att surfa i soluppgången!  Fortfarande väldigt mycket större vågor än vi är vana vid men vi fick till någon grön våg också. Med stora leenden gick vi upp till huset och där hade vi en fin frukost ute på verandan med utsikt över havet! 

På med våtdräkter igen och nu boogie board, surf och vatten lek med barnen!! Kojbygge och mys på stranden-sen grillade Jimmy lamm till lunch. Nu när vi är i landet med fler får än människor fick det bli denna passade lunch haha!

Hedda sov och vi mös med Hugo och Hannes i vår lilla trädgård. 

På kvällen var vi bjudna på middag hos våra vänner, en holländsk familj som vi innan bodde grannar med här i Nya Zeeland. Cynthia och Matteus med barnen Rein och Lilly. Vi brukade fiska long-line med dem och umgås när vi bodde här. Nu hade de flyttat längre bort i Ohope, till ett stort fint hus med utsikt över hamnen och slättlandskap. De har bott i Nya Zeeland i 6 år nu och vill hem till Holland men de har inte lyckats sälja sitt hus än. 

De bjöd på en härlig middag, barnen spelade fotboll, spel och såg lite film. Jätte roligt att träffas igen men lite konstigt när man säger hejdå för ingen av oss vet när och var i världen vi ses igen. 

Söndagen fortskred likadant som lördagen med surf, bad, plocka snäckor, spela spel i trädgården och njuta.  Hannes och Hedda bakade hallonpaj som vi åt på stranden på eftermiddagen. 

På måndagen regnade det lite och var lite svalare så efter soluppgångs surf (som nu var lite mindre och mer behagliga vågor) körde vi till en varm källa inåt landet. Mitt i naturen är där en liten sjö som är super varm och skön men som luktar lite äggfis av allt svavel. Simmar man in under träden till källan där vattnet kommer ifrån ser man att det kokar och det blir väldigt varmt. Så varmt att man inte klarar av att simma ända fram. Det är väldigt skönt men underligt att det mitt i naturen finns en jacuzzi pool haha! Hedda älskade att simma  utan vågor hihi! 

Väl hem igen träffade vi en annan gammal vän till oss, Shelly och hennes barn Ryder som gick i Hugos klass i Nya Zeeland och de gick på samma after school surf. Rydéns  lillebror Hayzen var också med. Vi lekte tillsammans på stranden och byggde koja. 

Tisdag morgon kom Craig förbi, han vi hyr huset av. Han bor bara några hus bort och vi har träffat han varje morgon ute i vattnet för han surfar också som de flesta som bor här. 

Han har dessutom varit nere på stranden med ett litet sol-tält som Hedda kan sitta under när solen är som starkast och så fick vi låna en boogie board till. Ja han vill verkligen att vi ska ha det bra och tar hand om oss. 

Nu undrade han om vi ville komma till hans farm där det går massa små nyfikna kalvar och betar och man har super fin utsikt. Klart!! Vi körde 15 minuter söderut och upp bland kullarna. Vilken vacker plats och mycket riktigt, kalvarna ville gärna hälsa!! Hedda tyckte det var toppen kul men lite läskigt när de kom för nära. 

Plötsligt rullade Craig ut en liten jeep och undrade om Hugo och Hannes vill åka. Sen fick Hugo för första gången köra själv! Vilken körlektion mitt i en brant hage fullt av nyfikna kalvar som sprang efter bilen och inte var det automatare heller utan han fick växla själv! Craig instruerade lugnt och Hugo var så stolt att han lyckats köra runt. Starten i uppförsbacken var inte lätt men annars gick det smärtfritt! 

Hemma igen badade vi och åt en sen lunch. Jag och Jimmy tog en extra surf för nu närmade det sig slutet på denna Ohope tid. Redan nästa dag skulle vi köra mot Debs. Vi såg att vädret  skulle bli kanon nästa dag och nu äntligen var det lite mindre lugnare vågor, som vi är vana vid i Ohope. Vi bokade ett boende halvvägs till Debs så att vi slapp köra i nästan 8 timmar samma dag. Och så kunde vi både surfa tidigt och sen kunde hela familjen surfa, bada och riktigt njuta av en sista Ohope dag i solen! Det blev till och med pannkaksfest innan vi på eftermiddagen lämnade Ohope.

Ett snabbt stopp i Whakatane där vi på biblioteket skrev ut viktiga papper inför Tahiti seglingen och sen bar det iväg mot Auckland och Orewa. Ja, nu närmar det sig slutet på första delen av vår resa där vi rest runt och träffat vänner, utforskat, upplevt så mycket fantastiskt, tränat cirkus, surfat och snowboardat. Nu väntar andra delen, att segla i Franska Polynesien med vår fina båt! (hoppas vi, har inte sett den än). Nerverna börjar att komma, detta har vi jobbat för, planerat och fixat med sedan april förra året! Och nu är det snart dax! På Söndag flyger vi till Papeete och vår katamaran – en Lagoon  42. 

Yippee, we were back for the third time in Ohope and also in the same house we stayed in for 8 months! It is a special feeling when we come here. So wonderful and a bit sad because we miss Ohope sometimes when we are home in Sweden. 

It is so fantastic when we drive through Whakatane and down the hill to Ohope and we can  see the ocean and the waves rolling in. We are so incredibly happy that we, 6 years ago, from little Sweden ”happened” to find this little gem with super nice waves, beautiful nature, cozy and above all accommodation right on the beach! We were so nervous when we first came here and was going to live here for 8 months and it turned out so well! We made friends for life and now is the third time we are back!! 

After lunch at the Moxi Café with very exciting dishes, we came to the West End, as the beach in front of the house is called. Although now the house was completely renovated by the new owner Craig. What a lift! He had done it so well. The last time we stayed here it really wasn’t that nice but now wow!! 

We met Troy with the whole surf school and Hugo got to borrow a board immediately. So it was just a matter of putting on the wetsuits and throwing yourself out into the waves. In Ohope there are usually nice beginner waves but today it was very big waves to be Ohope!! Crazy surfers were in the water out in the back catching the big waves. We stayed in the white today, not really comfortable with so much water rolling in haha! 

After a lovely surf, the whole family went to New World, the grocery store in Whakatane. Now we had a kitchen, fridge and freezer so we went a bit bananas buying so much good food. Hannes wanted to bake raspberry pie, Hugo found his favourites, yes the car was full when we went back. 

Me and Jimmy set the clock early, before the sunrise. We worked a bit and then when the first light started to come, we had coffee on the nice bench on the beach. Then we jumped in the wetsuit and ran into the sea! Wow, there were a lot of surfers out before 7 o’clock. There is something special about surfing at sunrise! Still much bigger waves than we are used to, but we got some green waves too. With big smiles we went up to the house and there we had a nice big breakfast out on the veranda with a view of the ocean.

All five of us put on wetsuits  and now it was time to boogie board, surf and play with the kids!! Jimmy grilled lamb for lunch. Now that we are in the country with more sheep than people, it had to be this suitable lunch haha! 

Hedda slept and we had a good time with Hugo and Hannes in our little garden.

 In the evening we were invited to dinner with our friends, a Dutch family with whom we previously lived next door in New Zealand. Cynthia and Matthew with children Rein and Lilly. We used to fish long-line with them and hang out when we lived here. Now they had moved further away in Ohope, to a big nice house with a view of the harbour and  landscapes. They have lived in New Zealand for 6 years now and want to go home to Holland but they have not managed to sell their house yet. 

They made us a lovely dinner, the children played football, games and watched some movies. It’s great to meet again, but a bit strange when you say goodbye because none of us know when and where in the world we will see each other again.

 Sunday proceeded the same as Saturday with surfing, swimming, picking shells, playing games in the garden and enjoying life. Hannes and Hedda baked raspberry pie which we ate on the beach in the afternoon. 

On Monday it rained a bit and was a little cooler so after sunrise surf (which was now a little smaller and more pleasant waves) we drove to a hot spring inland. In the middle of nature, there is a small lake that is super warm and beautiful but smells a bit of like an  egg-fart from all the sulphur. If you swim under the trees to the spring where the water comes from, you see that it boils and it gets very hot. So hot that you can’t swim all the way. It’s very nice but strange that in the middle of nature there is a jacuzzi pool haha! Hedda loved to swim without waves hihi!

 Once back home, we met another old friend of ours, Shelly and her children Ryder who were in Hugo’s class in New Zealand and they went to the same after school surf. Rydén’s little brother Hayzen was also there. We played together on the beach and built a hut.

 Tuesday morning Craig came by, the one we rents the house from. He lives just a few houses away and we have met him every morning out in the water because he also surfs like most people who live here do. He has also been down on the beach with a small  tent that Hedda can sit under when the sun is at its strongest and he had a boogie board for us as well. He really wants us to have a good time and he takes care of us.

 Now he wondered if we wanted to come to his farm where there are lots of small curious calves and to experience the nice view. Of course, we drove 15 minutes south and up among the hills. What a beautiful place and very true, the calves wanted to say hello!! Hedda thought it was great fun but a bit scary when they got too close. 

Suddenly, Craig rolled out a little jeep and wondered if Hugo and Hannes wanted to try it. Hugo got to drive himself as well for the first time! What a driving lesson in the middle of a steep paddock full of curious calves that ran after the car and it wasn’t an automatic either,  he had to change gears himself! Craig instructed calmly and Hugo was so proud that he managed to drive around. The start on the uphill was not easy, but otherwise it went well!

 Back home we swam and had a late lunch. Jimmy and I took an extra surf because now it was approaching the end of this Ohope time. The very next day we would drive towards Debs. We saw that the weather would be great the next day and finally with small beautiful waves, which we are used to in Ohope. We booked an accommodation halfway to Debs so we didn’t have to drive for almost 8 hours on the same day. And then we could both surf early and then the whole family could surf, swim and really enjoy a last day in the sun! We even had time for a  a pancake feast before we left Ohope in the afternoon. 

A quick stop in Whakatane where we went to the library to printed out important papers for the Tahiti sailing and then it was off to Auckland and Orewa. Yes, now the first part of our adventure is coming to an end. We have traveled around and met friends, explored, practiced circus, surfed and snowboarded. Now the second part awaits, to sail in French Polynesia with our nice boat! (We hope the boat is nice we haven’t seen it yet). The nerves are starting to come, we have worked for this, planned and organised it since April last year! And now it’s almost time! On Sunday we fly to Papeete and our catamaran – a Lagoon 42.
